Standing United Against China’s Aggression
The Stratbase Institute strongly condemns China’s latest act of aggression, as its Coast Guard once again harassed BFAR vessels near Bajo de Masinloc on June 20 using water cannons and dangerous maneuvers. This is not an isolated event—only the latest in a series of unprovoked actions that demonstrate China’s blatant disregard for the Philippines’ sovereignty and territorial integrity. These acts are unacceptable, reckless, and a direct threat to the safety of Filipino personnel conducting legitimate and peaceful activities in our own waters.
We thank our allies—the United States, South Korea, New Zealand, and other like-minded nations—for standing with the Filipino people. Their support sends a clear and united message: the world rejects China’s continued coercion and aggressive behavior in Philippine waters.
In stark contrast, Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent remarks echoing China’s position are blatantly irresponsible and misleading. The Philippines is not acting on behalf of any foreign power; we are asserting our sovereign rights under international law and the 2016 Arbitral Award—something she, as a duly elected public official, should be defending. Her statements undermine our national interest and betray her constitutional duty to protect the security and welfare of the Filipino people.
Now more than ever, our leaders must stand firm in defending the country’s sovereignty, maritime rights, and territorial integrity.
We urge them to continue working closely with responsible members of the international community to counter China’s aggression and coercive actions and uphold a rules-based international order.
